Council Member Requests

Concrete Spills on Roadways – On May 21, Council Member Holland requested an investigation into bumps on Teasley and Loop 288. Staff found these were caused by spilled concrete. The concrete on Teasley has been removed, and coordination with TXDOT is ongoing for a brief lane closure to remove the concrete on Loop 288 next week.

Noise Complaints at/near Fred Moore Park – On May 24, Council Member Byrd relayed a citizen’s concerns about after-hours noise in Fred Moore Park. Staff found over a dozen noise complaints since the start of the year, though no citations or arrests have been made. Staff will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Resident’s Concerns About Alert Denton – On May 26, Council Member Beck shared residents’ concerns about the Outdoor Warning System (OWS) sirens and the Alert Denton notification system. The OWS sirens are activated for tornado warnings or extreme weather by the National Weather Service. The Alert Denton system is used by City Emergency Management to notify residents of emergencies but is not tied to the OWS sirens. Staff are considering additional community education on these systems. Residents can sign up for notifications on the City’s Emergency Warning Systems website.

Denton Storm Response and Recovery: Efforts and Mutual Aid

The City of Denton’s staff has been diligently addressing power outages and damages caused by recent storms in the area. Notably, Denton Municipal Electric (DME) provided mutual aid after severe storms, including a tornado, affected North Texas counties. DME sent two crews to Valley View, with supplies from CoServ, and will be reimbursed for expenses per their mutual aid agreement.

Following the severe storm on May 28, which caused extensive damage to the electrical system, DME crews, with support from Garland Power & Light, worked continuously to restore power to affected residents and businesses, reducing outages from 9,000 to none. DME maintained proactive communication with the community throughout the recovery effort.

After restoring power in Denton by May 29, DME sent additional crews to assist Garland Power and Light beginning May 30. The City plans to provide more detailed recognition of staff efforts in the coming weeks.
