Denton, TX, June 3, 2024 – The City of Denton is still grappling with the aftermath of the significant storm that hit the area on Memorial Day. The storm has led to widespread debris, posing considerable challenges for residents and the city’s Solid Waste & Recycling Department.
We want to take a moment to applaud the outstanding work of our Solid Waste and Recycling (SWR) teams in servicing the city following last week’s storm. Although our crews made excellent progress over the weekend, the excessive volume of storm debris still at the curb prevented them from completing Thursday’s yard waste and bulk waste routes. Our teams are actively working today, Monday, June 3, to finish these routes to ensure that our Thursday customers face no further inconvenience.
SWR plans to start Monday’s routes tomorrow, Tuesday, June 4. Because of this, services for the rest of the week will run one day behind, with delays expected to continue throughout the week. However, our goal is to clear most, if not all, storm-related brush debris as quickly as possible, ideally within the next 10 days. It’s just the brush that is pushed. Garbage and recycling will maintain their normal schedule.
In response to the storm’s impact, the department has mobilized all available resources, including collection and landfill teams, to address the increased volume of waste. However, the substantial amount of storm debris has resulted in delays for yard waste and bulk service pickups throughout the week. The department has warned that not all routes may be completed on their scheduled days.
Despite these delays, the department reassures residents that regular trash and recycling collections will continue as planned. To efficiently manage the debris, the department has launched “Operation Push,” a strategy aimed at maximizing the collection of yard and bulk waste within the normal working hours of the teams. If a route is not finished by the end of a shift, it will be prioritized the following day. Residents are advised to leave their yard waste and bulky items at the curb until collected.
The department is extending its efforts to include Saturday operations, with the goal of completing the initial pass of collections by the end of business on June 1. Officials emphasize the importance of the well-being of their staff, especially in high temperatures, and are taking measures to ensure that no one exceeds their physical limits.
The City of Denton appreciates the community’s support and patience as they work diligently to manage the storm’s impact and restore normal services.
