The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. This report outlines proposed amendments to the city’s Affordability Incentive Program to expand access and align requirements with housing market conditions, announces DTV community video highlights, details a Feb. 9–Mar. 22 natatorium closure for major repairs with alternative swim locations and membership extensions, features a shy shelter dog named Lulu seeking an experienced adopter, and schedules controlled burns at the Burch Property and North Lakes Park to restore native habitat. It also confirms safety improvements through conversion of the East Prairie and South Bradshaw intersection to an all-way stop and lists two long-term Roselawn Drive rolling closures for apartment redevelopment work.
General Information
Affordability Incentive Program Amendments – Staff propose updates to the Section 2.12 program to make incentives easier to use and better aligned with local housing conditions, including removing the City’s right of first refusal, allowing broader access to all incentives at a 15% affordability threshold, adjusting income targets and affordability periods to reflect rental and homeownership market realities, and clarifying rules for small and infill developments, with public hearings anticipated in late February and early March.
DTV Community Video Highlights – City television released January videos promoting community engagement and awareness, including a Coffee Crawl fundraiser, winter storm scenes around Denton, volunteer trail work at South Lakes Park, and a fiscal year review highlighting City accomplishments, with content airing on DTV and shared through social media and YouTube.
Natatorium Closure and Repairs – The Denton Natatorium will close Feb. 9 through Mar. 22 for pump room, roof, pool deck, and pool shell repairs coordinated with Denton ISD schedules, and existing memberships will be extended while residents are directed to several regional indoor swimming facilities as temporary alternatives.
Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Lulu – Lulu is a timid dog rescued from living alone in the woods who is now crate trained and adjusting in foster care, best suited for a calm home with patient, experienced caregivers, particularly women, where she can continue building confidence and trust.
Upcoming Controlled Burns – Denton Fire will conduct habitat restoration burns on Feb. 9 at the Burch Property and Feb. 10 at North Lakes Park, covering 46 and 22 acres respectively, with trail closures, equipment support, and public notifications planned, and the North Lakes burn contingent on wind conditions to limit smoke impacts.
