The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. This week highlights Denton Municipal Electric’s seventh consecutive Excellence in Reliability Award, new DTV videos including a feature on Denton’s Bird City Texas designation, and a pet adoption spotlight. It also outlines recent and upcoming transportation updates, including traffic safety studies on US 380, Montecito Drive, and Prairie and Elm Streets, progress on construction projects like Bernard Street and Audra Lane, and development discussions for the Denton 195 and US 377 parcels. Additionally, a resident’s concern about private towing practices was addressed.
General Information
Excellence in Reliability Award – Denton Municipal Electric (DME) has received the 2024 Excellence in Reliability Award from the American Public Power Association for the seventh year in a row. This recognition is based on their outstanding SAIDI score of 22.55 minutes, placing them in the top quartile of electric utilities nationwide, as reported to the Energy Information Administration.
DTV Video Highlights for March – DTV released several informative videos in March, including “Denton Becomes a Bird City,” celebrating the city’s new status as a Bird City Texas member, “Circuit Training at Denton Senior Center,” showcasing a new fitness class, and “Walk Sign Is On!” All videos are aired on DTV, shared through social media, and available on the City’s YouTube channel.
Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Baby Girl, a one-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier, has been at the Denton shelter since February 11, 2025. She is housebroken, loves toys, and does well with other large dogs. While she’s affectionate and food-motivated, she would benefit from leash training to help with pulling during walks.
Monthly Mobility Report – Innovative Transportation Solutions has released its latest report detailing ongoing Texas Department of Transportation regional projects. The full ITS Monthly Mobility Report is available for review.
Council Member Requests
University Drive / Highway 380 and Malone Traffic Study – A comprehensive traffic and safety audit was conducted along US 380 from Bonnie Brae to Fulton in response to an inquiry. Although managed by TxDOT, the City maintains traffic signals along this route. The study collected data on traffic volume, vehicle speed, and crash history to improve safety for all users. The resulting report includes recommended actions ranging from immediate to long-term and will be presented to the Mobility Committee on April 30.
Traffic Safety in Hickory Creek Ranch Neighborhood – An inquiry regarding speeding on Montecito Drive led to a three-day data collection, which showed slightly elevated speeds above the 30 mph limit. Ongoing construction on Hickory Creek Road may be influencing traffic patterns. Public Service Announcements are being used to encourage safer driving, and the area will be reassessed after construction concludes.
Traffic Study of Prairie and Elm Streets – Concerns about pedestrian safety at Prairie and Elm Streets prompted a study, revealing the need for an all-way stop. Staff will recommend this change to TxDOT, which currently maintains Elm Street. Once construction is finished, TxDOT plans to transfer maintenance to the City of Denton.
Denton 195 Project – A neighborhood meeting was held to review updates to the proposed Denton 195 development at I-35W and Corbin Road. The revised plan seeks rezoning for a 195-acre mixed-use project, with 57.7 acres designated for multifamily housing and the remaining floodplain land under consideration for park space. This project, which began in 2022, will be reviewed by the Planning and Zoning Commission on April 9.
Construction on Bernard Street – Roadwork on Bernard Street from Lindsey to Fannin is part of the Neighborhood 2 and 6 Capital Improvements Project. The current focus is on asphalt base reconstruction, with concrete work and final paving to follow. Residents will be notified of any access interruptions, and completion is expected by June 2025.
Towing Practices – A resident’s concern about a delivery driver’s vehicle being towed from private property was addressed. The City does not conduct towing on private property; these are handled by contracted services. All tows are reported to the Denton Police Department, and complaints can be filed with them or reviewed by relevant state entities.
Audra Lane Construction – Lane closures on Audra Lane are part of paving and utility gas line relocation efforts. Most paving will be completed within two weeks, with a separate closure planned to finish work once the relocation is done. Two-way traffic will be restored in the interim.
377 and Brush Creek Development – A neighborhood meeting was held for a 2.7-acre parcel at US 377 and Brush Creek Road to discuss future commercial use. Although no formal application has been submitted, the parcel was left as a remainder during a previous rezoning and is intended for commercial development. Community input is being gathered to guide future plans.
