The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. Renovations at Denia Park are underway, expected to last 11 months, with key improvements such as ADA-compliant trails and upgraded ballfields, though some areas will remain open. The Downtown Denton Ambassador pilot program also shared a progress update. Council Member Holland addressed a compliant home-based business and cleanup efforts for a conservation easement. Mayor Hudspeth received updates on future land use, commercial waste container regulations, and trash cleanup near a municipal site, while Council Member Byrd raised concerns about an encampment.

General Information

Denia Park Renovation Project – The renovation of Denia Park is underway and expected to take 11 months to complete. Key improvements include replacing sections of the trail to meet ADA standards and upgrading the ballfields with new turf, dugouts, fencing, gates, bleachers, tables, and shade structures. While the ballfields will be inaccessible, playgrounds and courts will remain open, though some park trail sections will be closed during replacement.

Downtown Denton Ambassador Program Pilot Update – The Downtown Denton Ambassador pilot program began in January 2024. A progress report covering the first two quarters of the year details the program’s activities and community feedback.

Council Member Requests

Allowable Home-Based Businesses – Council Member Holland raised an inquiry regarding a home-based business. According to the 2002 Denton Development Code, therapeutic medical offices are permitted as home occupations. After six site inspections between July 19 and Aug. 7, the property was found in compliance.

Woodmere Conservation Easement Buffer – Council Member Holland was included in communications from a resident about the conservation easement buffer. The City contracted cleanup work, which began on Sept. 5 and is ongoing.

Encampment – In response to Council Member Byrd’s inquiry about an encampment on Teasley Lane, staff visited the location, provided resources to an individual, and discussed cleanup efforts with the property owners.

Future Land Use Map – Mayor Hudspeth requested information about future land use on East University Drive. Staff provided maps and additional details in response.

Commercial Waste Container – Mayor Hudspeth inquired about a commercial waste container on a construction site. Staff confirmed it belonged to a third party and informed the contractor that only city-issued containers are allowed. The contractor is working toward compliance.

Trash near Denton Municipal Electric Site – Mayor Hudspeth inquired about trash near a DME substation. The debris was removed, and the site was cleaned up.
