The Friday Staff Report to City Council is a weekly communication between staff and Council. Denton facilities will be closed Thursday and Friday. Warming stations open on Nov. 24th. Movie Elf, Breakfast with the Grinch, and other events.

General Information

City of Denton facilities will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday and will reopen at 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 28th with no Report distributed that week.

A list of inclement weather warming stations, effective Nov. 24 through Dec. 12, is available on the City’s website.

The Frame Street Railroad crossing will close on Saturday, Nov. 19 and the McKinney Street Railroad crossing will close on Sunday, Nov. 20 for maintenance purposes.

ODB will open a new emergency shelter on December 12 that offers 24/7 services. All programs and services currently being offered at St. Andrew (300 W. Oak) and Monsignor King Outreach Center (300 S. Woodrow) will move to a new location on Dec. 12th. MKOC will provide on-the-go meals from Nov. 24 to Dec. 11, and light program services will start on Nov. 28.

The Parks and Recreation Department is seeking accreditation from the National Recreation and Park Association.

Senior Animal Services Officer, Angel Linscott, was awarded the James Vyers Field Officer of the year at the Texas Animal Control Association (TACA) Conference in San Marcos Texas.

Viking Construction has completed 43 of the 66 roadways that need additional work. Payment for the remaining 23 roadways will be withheld until Viking successfully performs the necessary reapplications in Spring 2023.

A community meeting will be held Nov. 29th to discuss the Bonnie Brae Phase 5 project and traffic calming efforts in the City.

Council Member Requests

A QR code will be placed on City Council Member’s business cards that directs people to the City Council page on the City’s website.

Council Member McGee inquired about the contract discussion regarding the acquiring of right of way on Ruddell Street and Mingo Road. Staff will continue to bring additional information back about the Ruddell Street and Mingo Road right-of-way process as conversations with Texas Woman’s University (TWU) continue.

The Archer Trail segment is part of the Denton Street Rehabilitation Project, and will be repaired within the next 2 weeks.

Other VOD Stories

Council Member Watts asked staff about the status of the preschool program at the recreation centers. Parks and Recreation did offer a preschool program at the recreation centers until they were closed due to COVID-19. Parks and Recreation staff discontinued the preschool program because of low enrollment numbers and the costs and challenges of keeping, training, and certifying staff.

Upcoming Community Events and Meetings

Movie in the Park: Elf – On Friday, December 9th, Parks and Recreation will host a screening of Elf in Quakertown Park.

Breakfast with the Grinch – The Breakfast with the Grinch event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 10am to noon at the MLK Jr. Recreation Center and includes a photograph with the infamous holiday grouch and breakfast.

Wreaths Across America – Denton Parks and Recreation will host a National Wreaths Across America Day event on December 17th at Oakwood Cemetery. The wreath-laying ceremony will include an address by Rev. Reginal Logan, and the delivery and placement of the wreaths.

Cookies and Cocoa Drive-Thru – Join Parks and Recreation for a drive-thru holiday treat on Saturday, Dec. 17 at Denia Recreation Center (1001 Parvin Street). Staff will provide delicious hot cocoa and cookies to participants from 4 to 8 p.m.
