The City of Denton has enacted two new ordinances aimed at enhancing the quality of life for its residents by ensuring access to essential air conditioning during the hot summer months. These measures highlight the city’s dedication to public health, safety, and welfare, particularly as extreme heat poses significant hazards.
Mandatory Air Conditioning in Rental Units
One of the new ordinances requires all landlords within Denton’s city limits to provide air conditioning systems in residential rental units. This regulation is intended to ensure that indoor environments remain safe and comfortable during periods of extreme heat.
Protection of Residents’ Right to Use Window AC Units
In addition, the Denton City Council has passed an ordinance that prohibits community associations from restricting the use of window air conditioning units. This decision responds to community feedback and aims to support residents further by allowing the use of such cooling devices during extreme heat conditions, ensuring their health and safety irrespective of any pre-existing association rules.
“The well-being of our community is a top priority for the City of Denton,” said City Manager Sara Hensley. “With the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme heat, it is crucial that we take proactive steps to protect our residents, especially those who may be most vulnerable.”
The ordinances took effect immediately. The City’s Community Improvement Services Division is prepared to assist landlords and residents with the transition to compliance. Individuals encountering non-compliance or restrictions from their community associations are encouraged to contact Community Improvement Services at 940-349-8743 or cis@cityofdenton.com.
