The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. This week’s highlights include the release of the City Auditor’s second quarter report, court closure for staff training on May 7, and an update on Council priority projects tracked via a public dashboard. Additional updates cover regional transportation efforts, Building Safety Month activities, and the Mayor’s featured adoptable pet. Staff also responded to Council inquiries regarding housing assistance for employees, dust control at a construction site, interim flood mitigation near Old North Park, and new stop sign installations to enhance safety on Sundown Boulevard.
General Information
City Auditor’s Second Quarter Report – The City Auditor’s Office released its FY 2024-25 second quarter performance report, highlighting the completion of an audit on Animal Services and responses to three advisory requests. By the end of the quarter, 55% of the audit project time budget had been utilized. These reports update the City Council and public on internal audit progress and recommendation follow-ups and are available on the internal audit website.
Municipal Court Closed for Training – The Municipal Court will be closed on Wednesday, May 7, for staff development and training. Despite the closure, the automated phone payment system and online services—covering case information, payments, and resolutions—will remain accessible. Notifications have been placed on all relevant platforms.
City Council Priorities Update – An update from the City Manager’s Office details progress on Council priorities through the first fiscal quarter. These initiatives are tracked via the City’s performance software and shared publicly through a dashboard showcasing over 100 projects aligned with Council’s key focus areas.
Monthly Mobility Report – Innovative Transportation Solutions has released its monthly report summarizing regional transportation projects by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The full report is available for review.
Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Kenny, a two-year-old male Lab mix, is featured as the Mayor’s Pet Spotlight. He is potty trained, weighs around 66 pounds, and is best suited for an active home, ideally with calm dog companions. Kenny needs leash training but is ready to meet prospective adopters or fosters.
Building Safety Month (Updated) – The City is celebrating Building Safety Month in May with a children’s coloring contest for ages 0–12, accepting entries through May 31. Coloring templates and entry details are available via the Building Safety Month 2025 Story Map. A proclamation recognizing the occasion will be presented at the May 6 City Council meeting.
Council Member Requests
Homebuyer Incentive for City Employees – In response to an inquiry from Council Member Holland, it was confirmed that while the City does not offer a specific home purchase incentive for employees, it does provide Homebuyer 101 educational classes open to both staff and the public. Additionally, the Homebuyer Assistance Program offers down payment and closing cost support to first-time buyers who meet the 80% Area Median Income threshold.
Neighborhood Construction Concerns – Following a resident complaint from Thistle Hill Estates about dust caused by nearby Parkside subdivision construction, staff coordinated with the developer and contractor to increase dust control efforts. A dedicated water truck will now remain onsite to improve dust mitigation.
Old North Park Flooding – In response to concerns about flooding near the 380 Old North Park development, staff reported that underground detention systems are being installed as a temporary solution to manage runoff. Though not yet fully functional, developers have been instructed to implement interim measures to reduce flooding until the permanent drainage infrastructure is completed.
Stop Signs on Sundown Boulevard – After a resident inquiry about stop sign spacing, staff confirmed that All-Way Stop Controls were installed at Sundown Boulevard intersections with Clubhouse Drive and Lake Country Drive based on a speed study. These changes aim to improve traffic and pedestrian safety, particularly at a midblock trail crossing. A follow-up evaluation will be conducted within two to three weeks to assess their effectiveness.
