General Information
Airport Activity Record – In 2024, Denton Enterprise Airport marked a record year, recording 221,946 aircraft operations—a significant increase from the previous year. This metric is crucial for future planning regarding the airport’s infrastructure and land use. The continuous growth in aircraft activity underscores the airport’s commitment to maintaining a safe and sustainable environment for its users.
Bird City Certification – In January 2025, Denton was officially recognized as a Bird City by Bird City Texas, a program initiated by Audubon Texas and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 2018. This certification celebrates Denton’s achievements in habitat conservation, reducing threats to birds, and fostering community engagement. The certification was a collaborative effort involving local universities and environmental groups.
Commercial Diversion Program Update – The Solid Waste and Recycling Department in Denton has collected approximately 1,100 diversion plans from commercial entities as part of a compliance effort with the City’s Commercial Diversion Ordinance initiated in July 2023. About half of the commercial entities have submitted their plans, which aim to divert recyclables and other waste from landfills. The department is wrapping up its outreach to ensure full compliance by mid-2024.
Animal Shelter Improvements – The Linda McNatt Animal Care Facility has introduced new padded inserts in animal kennels to prevent “happy tail,” an injury that occurs when dogs wag their tails against hard surfaces. This enhancement is part of a broader initiative to improve animal welfare at the shelter, with plans to expand the use of these protective measures.
Urgent Animal Placements – Denton Animal Services has developed an urgent placement list to help animals experiencing prolonged shelter stress or recovering from medical procedures. This initiative aims to improve the mental health of these animals by facilitating quicker adoptions or fostering, providing them with a home environment which significantly aids in their recovery.
Mayor’s Shelter Pet Spotlight – Spud, a 2-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier, is currently highlighted by the Mayor’s Shelter Pet Spotlight. Known for his energetic and affectionate nature, Spud is ideal for an active household. He is currently experiencing separation anxiety and urgently needs a stable and loving home to improve his well-being.
