Denton, TX, Jan. 16, 2025 – The City of Denton has announced several closures and adjustments to services in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20. Following the holiday, normal operations will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Community Shelters

With City offices closed, Denton residents are encouraged to use community service providers to find shelter from cold weather. These facilities operate throughout the year, offering services such as daytime warming stations, meals, and overnight lodging. Residents are advised to check these services’ capacity by calling in advance or visiting their websites. Transportation to these shelters is facilitated by the Denton County Transportation Authority. Volunteering opportunities are also available, details of which can be found on the Our Daily Bread website.

Airport

While airport administrative offices will close, the air traffic control tower will operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The airfield remains functional around the clock, with Airport Operations accessible at (940) 349-7722.

Animal Services

The Linda McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center will not be open on Jan. 20. Non-emergency animal reports can be made by calling (940) 349-8181, option 1, or 911 for emergencies.

Denton Public Library

All public library locations in Denton will be closed; normal hours resume on Tuesday.

Municipal Court

Denton’s Municipal Court will shutter temporarily, resuming regular operations the next day. Online services continue via the City of Denton’s court website, and telephone payments can be made at (940) 349-7244.

Parks and Recreation

Most recreational facilities will be closed. However, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center will open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for a Martin Luther King Day Celebration. Regular activities at this location resume post-holiday. The Denton Tennis and Pickleball Center and North Lakes Driving Range will accommodate visitors during limited hours.

Public Safety

Emergency services will remain operational, with Denton Police available through the non-emergency number at (940) 349-8181 or 911 in urgent circumstances.

Solid Waste and Recycling

Curbside trash and recycling collection will be deferred by one day for the week, with the City landfill operational from 7 a.m. to noon on the holiday.

Utilities

Denton Utilities Customer Service offices will not open but will resume service on Tuesday. Utility emergencies can be reported to Utilities dispatch at (940) 349-7000.

These adjustments ensure essential services remain available while honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
