The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. Highlights include the closure of the Municipal Court for staff development on May 22, a successful investor forum at Denton Enterprise Airport on May 9, and a free vaccination clinic by Denton Animal Services on May 15. The FY 2024-25 Action Plan for Housing and Community Development is open for public review, and a virtual community meeting on micro-surfacing is scheduled for May 23. Additionally, a Street Outreach funding webinar will be held on May 30, and the latest edition of Denton Municipal Electric’s newsletter is available. Council members addressed resident concerns about flooding, speeding, short-term rental notifications, and lawn repair after city service work. Information was also provided about the Neighborhood Sign Topper program and the Sister City program with San Nicolás de los Garza and Múzquiz, Mexico.

General Information

Municipal Court Closed for Staff Development – On May 22, the Municipal Court will be closed for staff development. Automated phone payment systems and all online options, including case information and payment remittance, will remain available. Notifications about the closure have been placed on the phone system, court website, and at the entrance.

Airport Economic Development Partnership Forum – On May 9, the Economic Development Partnership hosted an investor forum at Denton Enterprise Airport with nearly 100 attendees. The event featured a panel discussion on Denton’s aviation future with representatives from the airport, TWU Aviation program, and Sheltair. It highlighted the airport’s regional role and business opportunities.

Vaccination Clinic – On May 15, Denton Animal Services, in partnership with local organizations, hosted a free vaccination and microchip clinic in response to an increase in diseased raccoons. The clinic aimed to prevent the spread of the distemper virus within the community and shelters.

FY 2024-25 Action Plan for Housing and Community Development – The 2024-25 Action Plan is available for public review from May 20 to June 21, 2024. This plan, which serves as the City’s annual application for HUD funds, includes proposed projects and a funding total of $1,619,956.16. Public comments can be submitted via mail, email, phone, or fax, with a public hearing scheduled for June 18.

Micro-Surfacing Virtual Community Meeting – On May 23 at 6:00 PM, the Streets Department will hold a virtual meeting for residents affected by the 2024 micro-surfacing program. The meeting will provide an overview of the process, scope, and schedule, with work beginning on May 28 and expected to complete by mid-July. Invitations have been mailed to impacted residents.

Street Outreach Funding Opportunity Webinar – The City will host a virtual training webinar on May 30 at 2:30 PM to review updates to the Street Outreach grant application, eligibility, and timeline. The application period is from May 31 to June 28, with a presentation to the Community Services Advisory Committee on July 12.

In the Loop – The latest edition of Denton Municipal Electric’s quarterly newsletter, “In the Loop,” is now available online. It includes updates on DME projects, metering, achievements, and community events.

Council Member Requests

Flooding & Drainage Issues – On May 7 and May 14, Mayor Hudspeth and Mayor Pro Tem Beck forwarded residents’ concerns about property impacts from recent rains. Staff engaged with the residents to address the issues and will work towards solutions.

Nottingham Speed Study – On May 7, Mayor Pro Tem Beck shared concerns about speeding on Nottingham. A speed study revealed most drivers were traveling between 33 to 34.1 MPH in a 30 MPH zone. Police citations are possible due to the violations. Staff will install more speed limit signs and conduct further studies by October.

Short-Term Rental Registration – On May 11, Mayor Pro Tem Beck raised concerns about a lack of notification for a short-term rental property. Staff informed the property owner of the need to complete the registration by June 9.

Neighborhood Sign Toppers – On May 14, Council Member McGee inquired about the Sign Topper program. Staff provided information on the program, including the website and email for interested neighborhoods.

Service Call Lawn Repair – On May 14, Mayor Hudspeth relayed a resident’s concern about lawn damage following City service work. Staff shared the repair plan with the resident, and the lawn was restored with new sod.

Sister City Program – On May 14, Council Member McGee inquired about the Sister City program, which fosters long-term partnerships focused on cultural, educational, business, and trade exchanges. Denton had a Sister City relationship with San Nicolás de los Garza, Mexico, from 2000-2004 and a Friendship City relationship with Múzquiz, Mexico, since 2015.
