The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. Denton Enterprise Airport and contractor Jagoe Public won the TXAPA “Quality Asphalt Pavement Award” for their 2022 Runway/Taxiway Improvement Project. The City Council approved FAA grant funding for the Airport Master Plan Project, which will begin in June and last 12-18 months. Eureka 2 Playground will be closed from May 20-23 for equipment installation. Council Member Meltzer forwarded inquiries about Pembrook Place road conditions, responsibility for street trees, and a noise complaint. Staff assessed these issues, confirming maintenance inclusion for Pembrook Place, owner responsibility for street trees, and a valid noise variance for the complained-about event.

General Information

Airport Asphalt Pavement Award – Denton Enterprise Airport and contractor Jagoe Public won the TXAPA “Quality Asphalt Pavement Award” for the 2022 Runway/Taxiway Improvement Project, which reconstructed 880 feet of the main runway and realigned an adjoining taxiway.

Airport Master Plan Update – The City Council approved using FAA grant funding for the Airport Master Plan Project on April 2. The project will evaluate the airport’s facilities and regional role, with a Planning Advisory Committee meeting in June. The project will take 12-18 months.

Eureka 2 Playground Closure – Eureka 2 Playground at South Lakes Park will be closed from May 20-23 for new equipment installation, including a net climber, bridges, rails, surfacing, and hardware. Closure updates will be posted on the Parks & Recreation Facebook page.

Council Member Requests

Pembrook Place Road Condition – On May 1, Council Member Meltzer forwarded a resident’s inquiry about the condition of Pembrook Place. Staff assessed the roadway and determined it qualifies for inclusion in the current year’s maintenance workplan.

Street Trees – On May 5, Council Member Meltzer forwarded an inquiry regarding responsibility for street trees. These trees, located within the public right of way alongside roads, must be maintained by the owner of the adjoining property according to the City’s tree ordinance.

Noise Complaint – On May 5, Council Member Meltzer forwarded a resident’s noise complaint. Staff confirmed there was an authorized event in the area. Events with amplified sound after 10:00 P.M. from Monday to Saturday, and at any time on Sunday, require a special event noise variance per City Code. The variance was valid at the time of the complaint.

Sandburs in Joe Skiles Park – On May 8, Council Member Meltzer reported residents’ concerns about sandburs in Joe Skiles Park. The Joe Skiles Park Improvement Project is addressing these sandburs along with other park improvements. More information about the project can be found on its Discuss Denton page.
