In response to council inquiries, the Parks and Recreation department is experimenting with a new mowing schedule to promote biodiversity along Cooper Creek, while planned park enhancements and traffic light calibrations address community needs and concerns, ensuring Denton’s development is both thoughtful and inclusive.

General Information

Department Performance Scorecards – Strategic Services has launched the Public Works Performance Scorecard, viewable on the City of Denton’s Strategic Plan Dashboard. These scorecards are outcomes of workshops designed to help departments define their purpose, identify core services, and establish metrics for service evaluation. The Public Works scorecard features key data on services like street and sidewalk upkeep, traffic system management, and stormwater drainage maintenance.

Teddy Bear Parade – The Emily Fowler Central Library celebrated the 42nd annual Teddy Bear Parade, an event that invites children and their guardians to enjoy stories, songs, and dances about bears, followed by a parade through Quakertown Park. The event, which saw over 120 participants this year, concluded with a photo session with the library bear mascot.

Temporary Runway Closures at Denton Enterprise Airport – The Denton Enterprise Airport will experience temporary runway closures from April 1 to April 3 due to the 2024 Runway Reconstruction project. The main runway will be temporarily shortened, and in July, it will close for 45 days for full reconstruction. These activities are communicated to all tenants and filed with the FAA.

Keep Denton Beautiful Receives Honors – Keep Denton Beautiful (KDB) was awarded the Gold Star Affiliate by Keep Texas Beautiful and the 2023 President’s Circle Award by Keep America Beautiful, recognizing its commitment to community beautification and environmental stewardship at both the state and national levels.

Tree City USA Re-Certification – The City of Denton was recertified as a Tree City USA community by the National Arbor Day Foundation, marking its 33rd year of recognition. Denton also received the Growth Award for the 14th time, underscoring its commitment to urban forestry and community involvement.

DTV Video Highlights for March – DTV produced several videos to raise awareness and inform the community, including a pet adoption story, a feature on the Denton Teen Council’s involvement in the Great American Cleanup, and an introduction to Denton’s first-ever Multimedia Journalist, Kimberly Barroteran. These videos are available on DTV and the City’s YouTube channel.

Council Member Requests

Promoting Biodiversity along Cooper Creek – Following Mayor Pro Tem Beck’s request, the Parks and Recreation department is testing a new mowing schedule along Cooper Creek to enhance biodiversity. This initiative, a collaboration between staff and Mayor Pro Tem Beck, aims to adjust mowing practices based on the observed impacts on the local ecosystem.

Park Planning near the Oaks of Township II – Mayor Hudspeth addressed a resident’s query about potential park enhancements in The Oaks of Township II. The five-year Capital Improvement Program has allocated $350,000 for improvements, including new playground equipment in the area, with work expected to commence in Fall 2026.

Traffic Lights Inquiry – Council Member McGee raised questions about the calibration of traffic lights for motorcycles and bicycles at night. The city’s traffic lights employ a detection system that operates from 10:00pm to 6:00am to reduce wait times by adjusting to actual traffic rather than following a preset schedule, ensuring responsiveness to all types of vehicles.

Glen Gary Way Neighborhood – Mayor Pro Tem Beck relayed concerns about the state of landscaping and trash around a commercial property in the Glen Gary Way neighborhood. Upon inspection, the majority of the landscaping was found to be in poor condition, with violations for maintenance and cleanliness also noted. The property owner has been notified to address these issues, with a follow-up inspection planned to ensure compliance with city guidelines.
