The University of North Texas (UNT) is offering a host of events and activities throughout February to honor Black History Month, providing students and the local community with opportunities to engage in cultural and historical appreciation. UNT Dining Services will feature Black History Month menu specials every Thursday in February at all campus dining hall locations, showcasing a variety of dishes aimed at celebrating African American culture and history.

Organized by UNT’s Black Student Union, several events will take place throughout the month. Highlights include a Skate Night on February 18, a Fashion Show on February 22, and a Block Party slated for February 24. Attendees can look forward to detailed updates being shared via the Black Student Union’s Instagram page.

Keylen Davis, a senior in converged broadcasting and president of the Northwestern State University chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, spoke about the significance of the commemorations. He described Black History Month as an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the achievements and struggles of African Americans. Earlier in January, Davis and his fraternity members participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day March of Remembrance and shared their insights during a celebration program at the Martin Luther King Jr. Rec Center in Denton.

The Center for Belonging and Engagement at UNT is also contributing to the month’s activities by offering students a chance to attend the Denton Black Film Festival’s Poetry Slam on January 25. Additionally, it will host a showcase about the history of stepping on February 18 and a lunch and learn session with Dr. Jo Davis-McElligatt, an assistant professor specializing in Black literary and cultural studies, on February 25.

These events underscore UNT’s commitment to fostering an environment where students can engage with and learn about the historical and cultural contributions of African Americans. The university invites all students and community members to participate in these activities and join in the celebration and reflection that Black History Month inspires in Denton.
