Denton Parks and Recreation has announced its newest ambassador, Reddy, a lively mascot designed to embody the spirit of energy and enthusiasm for the city’s recreational programs. Reddy aims to encourage participation and foster a sense of community among residents of all ages.
Reddy was discovered in 2012 at the Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center in an unusually large nest made of twigs, grass, and bark strips. Initially mistaken for a person in a costume, it was later confirmed that Reddy is an extraordinarily large cardinal bird. Despite his inability to fly due to his size, Reddy actively engages in various activities, such as litter collection, ultimate frisbee, and practicing golf.
“During the school year, Reddy attends a school for young cardinals with aspirations of studying ornithology and environmental science at the University of Louisville,” said Omar, a spokesperson for Denton Parks and Recreation. “In his leisure time, Reddy enjoys mountain biking, hiking, and playing the ukulele.”
Reddy is a frequent visitor to popular locations around Denton, including Joe Skiles Park, Water Works Park, Downtown Denton Square, and Quakertown Park. Residents can look forward to meeting Reddy at upcoming events, with details available on Denton Parks and Recreation’s social media channels.
