In response to a significant drop in temperatures forecasted for North Texas, The Salvation Army has announced the opening of overnight warming shelters. The initiative aims to provide refuge and comprehensive support to vulnerable residents, particularly as temperatures plunge to 36 degrees or below over the coming days.

The Salvation Army has designated several facilities across North Texas for this purpose. In Denton County, both the Denton Corps Community Center at 1508 E. McKinney St. and the Lewisville Corps Community Center at 880 Fox Ave will open their doors on February 12 and 13. Additionally, shelters will be available in Dallas County at the Carr P. Collins Social Service Center and the Garland Corps Community Center, as well as in Tarrant County at the Arlington Corps Community Center and the Mabee Social Service Center.

These overnight warming shelters are part of The Salvation Army’s broader response to the cold, which includes providing warm food, drinks, emotional and spiritual care, clean-up kits, and further assistance to individuals and families in need. The organization is also deploying rapid response units to aid high-risk populations directly.

The Salvation Army, known as the region’s largest social services provider, serves communities across Dallas, Rockwall, Tarrant, Ellis, Denton, and Collin counties through a network of shelters, senior facilities, addiction recovery centers, food pantries, and recovery programs. With the capability to house and feed thousands of individuals weekly, the organization strives to address the ongoing challenges of poverty, addiction, and homelessness, beyond the immediate needs driven by inclement weather.

Major Paul McFarland, area commander of The Salvation Army of North Texas, emphasized the importance of these efforts in mitigating the potentially severe impacts of the cold on the community’s most vulnerable members. He notes that these initiatives are part of a year-long commitment to breaking cycles of adversity.

Residents seeking shelter or wishing to aid these efforts can visit The Salvation Army’s website for further information and opportunities to contribute to their relief programs.
