DENTON, Texas — Darci Middleton, a Texas Woman’s University alumna and former science teacher, sought a major life change away from the stresses of modern teaching. With a rekindled love for reading romance novels, she and her mother, Dawn Conner, embarked on a bold entrepreneurial journey to open a romance-themed bookstore and bar, The Plot Twist, in Denton’s historic downtown.

The Plot Twist stands out as a niche venture, combining the allure of romance novels with the ambiance of a cozy bar, offering coffee, mocktails, and cocktails alongside best-selling books. The store features a cozy lounge area with a faux fireplace, encouraging visitors to relax and immerse themselves in their favorite stories.

From its inception, the duo faced numerous challenges, from securing approximately $70,000 in needed funds to learning the intricacies of running a bookstore-bar hybrid. Through resourceful planning, help from family and volunteers, and leveraging DIY techniques, Middleton and Conner managed to renovate and open their store within a tight 78-day schedule.

The January opening of The Plot Twist was met with immense enthusiasm, drawing customers from across the country and causing long waits to enter. With a diverse romance genre selection and a dedicated local author section, the store quickly reached profitability within just two and a half weeks.

Middleton attributes the store’s swift success to its genre focus. Romance fiction, often underestimated, boasts a dedicated and extensive audience with genres spanning from contemporary to science fiction. In 2023, romance novel sales topped $1.4 billion, making it the most lucrative fiction sector globally.

Currently, Middleton faces the challenge of maintaining inventory due to high demand. The Plot Twist’s ability to make an early profit is a rarity, especially given that most new businesses typically take 18-24 months to achieve financial stability. Meanwhile, the store has already started supporting local authors and employs a number of local residents.

Middleton expressed gratitude for the community’s support and acknowledged the ongoing learning curve of her new venture, describing the process as both daunting and thrilling. The Plot Twist’s successful opening exemplifies Denton’s vibrant local business community and the enduring appeal of bookstores, especially those with a unique twist.
