To improve mobility and connectivity at the Hinkle and Mimosa Drive roundabout, new safety enhancements are scheduled to be installed this summer.
City staff are coordinating several safety enhancements to address visibility, bicycle and pedestrian connectivity, safety, among other things at the Hinkle and Mimosa Drive roundabout.
Hinkle Drive safety enhancements will include:
New streetlight installations and existing lighting enhancements to improve visibility for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists while mitigating impacts to migratory birds and other wildlife;
Complete sidewalk and bicycle connectivity on the east side of Hinkle Drive to connect the sidewalk for pedestrians and bicyclists traveling in the area;
Installation of new LED solar raised pavement markers; and
Installation of new reflective pavement markings along the median.
Mimosa Drive safety enhancements will include:
These safety enhancements are in addition to the drainage and road reconstruction project recently completed, which included the construction of a new storm drain along Windsor and Hinkle Drive to intercept runoff along the route and reconstruct the roadway on Hinkle Drive and Windsor Drive.
Motorists and residents traveling in the area over the next several weeks will see crews completing the new safety enhancements and should expect minimal traffic impacts during this time. Signage will be posted to alert motorists of the active construction and any temporary detours or lane closures.
While modern roundabouts are effective in reducing congestion, accident severity, and improving mobility compared to other traffic calming devices, the City wants to ensure motorists and community members are comfortable safely traveling through roundabouts. The City has video tutorials and resources on ways to safely navigate roundabouts for motorists pedestrians, bicyclists, and much more available online at www.cityofdenton.com/roundabouts. For additional information or questions, community members can contact the Traffic Engineering Department at (940) 349-8402 or email Chandrakanth.Muruganandham@cityofdenton.com.
