Temperatures are heating up once again and, for Texas, that signals the start of ozone season. With our partners at Air North Texas, the City of Denton Sustainability office is encouraging residents to take action and help us improve air quality this year.
Ozone pollution is the result of high temperatures, sunlight, and precursor pollutants from sources, such as vehicle emissions, power production, lawn equipment, and other energy-related sources. Because ozone formation is dependent on weather conditions, experts can predict when conditions will be right for high ozone days. These “Ozone Action Days” are when it is most important to practice air-improving behaviors, such as reducing vehicle use, not running gas-powered lawn equipment, and conserving energy and water.
Denton residents can stay Air Aware this summer by signing up for text and email air quality alerts through Air North Texas. Ozone can have health effects, such as the increased risk of asthma attacks, shortness of breath, coughing, and inflamed airways. High-risk groups, such as those with preexisting respiratory issues, children, and the elderly, should attempt to have a high awareness of when ozone formation is likely.
