Water Treatment Facility Undergoes Repairs, Community Urged to Conserve Water

Denton Stories

Listen to Story

Denton Water Utilities has announced a temporary reduction in water treatment capacity due to a damaged filter at one of its water treatment facilities. The utility company is actively working to repair the filter and restore full treatment capabilities. In the meantime, residents are being urged to conserve water to help manage the reduced capacity.

A key conservation measure being emphasized is adherence to the mandatory twice-a-week irrigation schedule. Residents are encouraged to check their automatic irrigation timers and sprinkler alignments to prevent water wastage. Proper irrigation practices can significantly reduce water consumption, particularly during the summer months when up to 70% of water usage can be attributed to lawn irrigation. Misaligned sprinklers and overwatering are common issues, often resulting in millions of gallons of wasted water daily.

To support the community in water conservation efforts, Denton Water Utilities is providing daily updates on water usage, rainfall totals, and conservation tips through their website. These updates include information on daily water usage trends and how they relate to potential drought conditions. For example, a recent comparison of rainfall showed a significant difference in water usage: May 2023 recorded only 0.86 inches of rain, while May 2024 saw 10.03 inches, directly impacting discretionary irrigation needs.

Denton Water Utilities is committed to maintaining water security and offers resources and information to help residents reduce discretionary water use. By following these guidelines, the community can help avoid the need for stricter water use restrictions during this repair period and contribute to long-term water sustainability.
