The City of Denton has confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in mosquitoes at two additional locations: the intersection of Wye Street and Mill Street and the Environmental, Education, Science, and Technology Building on the University of North Texas Campus. The mosquitoes, collected last week, tested positive for the virus, prompting the city to maintain a risk level 3 (public health concern).

At risk level 3, Denton will continue routine surveys of adult mosquitoes, identifying them to the species level and screening for the virus. West Nile virus, transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, can lead to serious illness or death.

Residents are advised to take precautions, including eliminating standing water around their homes, avoiding outdoor activity during peak mosquito hours (dusk and dawn), dressing in long sleeves and pants, and using insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

The City of Denton provides a limited supply of Bti briquettes, which kill mosquito larvae, available to residents with proof of residency. Distribution sites include Customer Service at 601 E. Hickory St., Ste F, and the City of Denton Composting at 1100 S. Mayhill Rd.

While the probability of a human outbreak is low to moderate, individuals over 60 and those with compromised immune systems are at a higher risk of severe illness if infected. Symptoms of West Nile virus can include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, and more severe neurological symptoms. Residents experiencing concerning symptoms are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider.
