Safety Tips for Cold Weather:

  • Dress in Layers: Wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. An inner layer of wool, silk, or polypropylene holds more body heat than cotton.
  • Protect Extremities: Wear a hat, scarf or knit mask to cover face and mouth, sleeves that are snug at the wrist, and mittens (warmer than gloves).
  • Stay Dry: Wet clothing chills the body rapidly. Stay as dry as possible and avoid sweating by removing layers when exerting yourself.
  • Limit Outdoor Exposure: Try to stay indoors during extremely cold weather. If you must go outside, make trips brief and stay dry.
  • Monitor Weather Updates: Stay informed about upcoming weather conditions to plan activities and take necessary precautions.
  • Prepare Your Home: Insulate outside faucets and pipes near outer walls. Ensure that furnaces, heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves are clean, well-ventilated, and in good working condition.
  • Travel Safely: Avoid traveling when sleet, freezing rain, or snow is predicted. If you must drive in inclement weather, allow extra time to reach your destination and monitor road conditions by visiting Drive Texas or calling (800) 452-9292.
