Denton Municipal Electric (DME) has entered into a power purchase agreement with Jupiter Power, LLC for 100 megawatts of battery storage capacity through the Tidwell Power II project in central Texas. This agreement, approved by the Denton City Council on September 30, represents a key advancement in DME’s focus on enhancing energy reliability, sustainability, and innovation.
The agreement specifies that DME will procure 100MW of battery storage with a two-hour duration. This contract is set for a 10-year term, beginning power delivery in June 2026.
Battery storage will significantly contribute to grid reliability in the ERCOT, especially during times of peak demand and evening hours when solar power declines but energy consumption remains high. By storing surplus energy for later use, battery systems help stabilize prices and boost grid strength.
This agreement further diversifies DME’s energy portfolio, which is already composed entirely of renewable wind and solar power. The integration of battery storage allows DME to continue providing safe and reliable power while meeting the changing needs of the Texas energy market.
“We’re excited for this forward-looking project,” said Tony Puente, DME General Manager. “Battery storage is an important component of our strategy to maintain affordability, reliability, and sustainability for the Denton community.”
