Denton, TX, Aug. 19, 2024 – The City of Denton announced today that it is approaching the implementation of Stage 2 drought measures, urging residents and businesses to intensify their water conservation efforts. With water demand reaching the critical threshold of 38 million gallons per day for the second consecutive day, the city faces the potential for stricter water use restrictions if this level is exceeded again tomorrow, Aug. 20.
While the city’s water supply remains stable, the situation has been exacerbated by ongoing repairs at the Lake Lewisville treatment facility, where two damaged filters have temporarily reduced water treatment capacity. If Stage 2 measures are enacted, residents will face additional restrictions, including a reduction in irrigation to one day per week and limitations on pool fills, drip irrigation, and foundation watering.
The City of Denton had previously managed to avoid Stage 2 drought restrictions last week, thanks to the community’s collective conservation efforts. With irrigation accounting for 70% of the city’s water usage, adherence to the twice-a-week watering schedule and proper maintenance of automatic sprinkler systems are critical to avoiding further restrictions.
The city continues to strongly encourage all residents to conserve water wherever possible. By sustaining these efforts, the community can help prevent the need for more stringent measures.
