General Information
Southeast Denton Live-Work Overlay – Enhancing Neighborhood Flexibility
The Southeast Denton Area Plan, adopted in July 2024, introduced a live-work overlay district aimed at boosting neighborhood vitality and housing affordability. This district allows limited neighborhood-scale retail use within single-family homes. Due to corridor-specific challenges and community input, staff proposed permitting a small number of stand-alone commercial uses along East Prairie Street. The Planning and Zoning Commission supported this recommendation at their May 28, 2025, work session, emphasizing development regulations to protect nearby residences.
Performance Scorecards – Finance Transparency Through Data
The City of Denton has released the Finance Department’s Performance Scorecard as part of its Strategic Plan Dashboard. This scorecard features data visualizations that highlight the department’s commitment to responsible financial management and transparency. It provides residents with insight into the City’s financial operations and progress.
Fan Giveaway 2025 – Keeping Residents Cool
The City’s annual Fan Giveaway is now active, with pre-registration available online. Fans can be collected at 1001 S. Mayhill Road during posted hours or at designated Friday pickup events. Distribution will continue through July 25, 2025, at various locations including recreation centers and libraries, while supplies last.
Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Meet Bernadette
Bernadette, a one-year-old Australian Cattle Dog, has been at the shelter since April 11 and is looking for a forever home. She is friendly, house-trained, and sociable with other dogs, making her ideal for families with multiple pets. Bernadette loves running, playing, and responds well to food-based training. She needs a home where she’ll receive plenty of exercise and attention.
Council Member Requests
A-train Rail Trail Maintenance – Cleanup and Habitat Restoration
In response to increased trash and overgrowth near the A-train rail trail behind Target on Loop 288, the Parks and Recreation Department is coordinating a cleanup effort with the City’s vendor. Starting June 9, brush and invasive privet will be removed to help restore the natural habitat and improve the space’s ecological function. A dedicated Discuss Denton page has been created for privet removal updates.
1900 Block of Mohican Street – Property Repairs Completed
Following a resident inquiry about alley and yard conditions after utility work on Mohican Street, Denton Municipal Electric staff inspected the site, completed necessary yard and fence repairs, and spoke directly with the property owner to address concerns.
Accessory Dwelling Units – No Separate Water Meters Allowed
City staff confirmed that current regulations under the Denton Development Code do not allow separate water meters for accessory dwelling units. All ADUs must share the primary residence’s water service connection.
Trail Flooding Near Roselawn Drive – Assessment Underway
A resident raised concerns about standing water near a trail off Roselawn Drive. The area is part of an active development site and was recently impacted by heavy rain. City staff are working with the developer to assess conditions and identify a suitable solution.
