Denton, TX, Aug. 27, 2025 – The City of Denton is alerting residents about a scam involving phone calls and messages falsely claiming that recipients missed jury duty and now face arrest unless they pay an immediate fine.

These fraudulent communications may use the names of real law enforcement officers or realistic phone numbers to appear credible.

How to Recognize the Scam

  • Scammers will ask for fines to be paid over the phone using gift cards, wire transfers, or cash apps.
  • No legitimate government entity will request personal information or payment via phone to prevent arrest.
  • Do not respond to these calls or messages. Avoid providing personal information.
  • Verify jury duty information via the court’s official website or by calling a known, correct court number.
  • Never share personal or financial details with unsolicited callers.
  • Promptly report the scam to law enforcement.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and share this information to protect others from falling victim to the scam.
