The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. Highlights include an upcoming community bike ride with Mayor Hudspeth and neighboring mayors, insights gained from a staff trip to Denmark on advanced water management, and public input opportunities for Denton’s 2025 Action Plan. Updates also cover the release of the latest financial report, the launch of a new dashboard tracking progress in Southeast Denton, and a spotlight on Coco the Husky, available for adoption. In response to Council inquiries, staff addressed downtown parking and safety efforts, sidewalk repairs at South Lakes Park to meet ADA standards, and construction delays on Robinwood Lane with a revised completion timeline.

General Information

Bike Ride with the Mayor – Community Event
On May 31 at 8:30 a.m., Mayor Hudspeth will join the Mayors of Lewisville and Corinth for a free community bike ride along the rail trail, starting at the Highland Village/Lewisville Lake DCTA A-Train Station. A bicycle safety presentation will be held prior to the ride. Parking is available at the station.

Fact-Finding Summary – Water Management in Denmark
City of Denton staff joined other U.S. municipal representatives on a fact-finding tour in Denmark, gaining insights into the country’s advanced water management systems. The visit included engagements with Danish government institutions, tours of modern treatment facilities, and presentations by HOFOR and other stakeholders on leak detection and water loss reduction. The group also studied Copenhagen’s integration of stormwater planning in urban development, highlighting Denmark’s commitment to climate neutrality by 2050 and offering valuable ideas for U.S. water utilities.

2025 Action Plan Public Comment Period – Community Development Input
The City of Denton is inviting public feedback on the draft 2025 Action Plan for Housing and Community Development, open for comment from May 19 to June 20, 2025. The plan outlines the city’s request for federal funds and supports housing and community development projects. A public hearing is scheduled for June 17.

Quarterly Financial Reports – City Financial Overview
The latest Quarterly Financial Report is now available, offering insights into Denton’s financial health, economic activity, and accountability measures. It includes an executive dashboard, summary of revenues, economic analysis, and an investment report.

Southeast Denton Area Plan Dashboard – Progress Tracking Tool
The new Southeast Denton Area Plan Dashboard is now live, allowing residents to track progress on goals such as neighborhood preservation, infrastructure improvements, economic development, and multimodal transportation. The dashboard reflects the city’s commitment to transparency and community engagement following the plan’s adoption in July 2024.

Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Coco the Husky
Coco is an energetic 11-month-old Siberian Husky looking for a forever home. He has been at the shelter since March 8 and is known for his sociable nature, love of toys, and compatibility with other large dogs. His playful energy makes him an ideal match for active families.

Council Member Requests

Downtown Square – Parking and Safety Measures
Following an inquiry from a local business owner, staff shared findings from the Downtown Denton Parking Study, which showed peak occupancy at 79 percent and frequent violations of the 2-hour parking limit. Cameras have been installed around the square to monitor traffic, with live feeds being used by the Police Department to address safety concerns. Additional traffic data is being collected for a future safety audit.

Sidewalk Repair at South Lakes Park – ADA Compliance and Maintenance Access
In response to concerns about City vehicles on park sidewalks, staff clarified that pavement replacement at South Lakes Park is driven by ADA compliance needs due to soil heaving and failing expansion joints. Older sidewalks were not built for heavy vehicle use, but new standards require more durable concrete to support park maintenance. Staff aim to limit heavy vehicle traffic and minimize wear on the trails.

Robinwood Construction – Delays and Updated Timeline
Roadwork on Robinwood Lane and nearby streets has faced setbacks due to rain, poor soil, and a collapsed drainage line. Subgrade repairs have been completed, with paving expected to resume soon. Drainage pipes are on order, and the entire project, including Clover, Live Oak, Shadywood, and Mistywood, is scheduled for completion by late July.
