The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. This week’s highlights include the successful Stream Clean 2024 event, where 62 volunteers collected 1.5 tons of waste from local waterways, and the City’s progress towards American Public Works Association accreditation, a multi-department effort to meet national public works standards. Additionally, staff responded to a resident inquiry regarding traffic safety on Woodbrook Street and Hollyhill Lane, deciding to install new safety signage to address concerns, with completion expected by January 10.

General Information

Stream Clean 2024 – The City hosted the Stream Clean 2024 event on Saturday, December 7, with 62 Denton volunteers participating. They successfully collected 1.5 tons of waste from local waterways, including 143 bags of trash and large items such as tires, shopping carts, bike frames, and a box fan.

City of Denton APWA Accreditation – The City is working towards American Public Works Association (APWA) accreditation, which recognizes excellence in public works and adherence to national standards. Led by Water Utilities and Streets Operations, the project involves multiple departments, including Capital Projects, Community Services, and more. The process includes a three-year timeline for completing a self-assessment, peer review, and formal evaluation after the application is accepted.

Council Member Requests

Woodbrook Street and Hollyhill Lane – Following a resident inquiry on November 7, it was determined that traffic volumes on Woodbrook and Hollyhill are too low to justify all-way stop signs. Instead, two “cross traffic does not stop” signs will be added to Woodbrook Street, and a “no parking here to the corner” sign will be installed for westbound Hollyhill Lane to improve safety. Completion is expected by January 10.
