DENTON — The TWU Theatre is set to close its 2024-25 season with a bold presentation of ‘Spring Awakening,’ a rock musical exploring adolescent challenges and identity. Scheduled to run from April 11-13 and April 17-19 at the Redbud Theater, the production dives into themes of sexuality and the turbulence of growing up, set against a backdrop of an evolving but still restrictive society.
Tickets are priced at $5 for students and seniors, with general admission at $10. They can be purchased online via the university’s website or by contacting the TWU Theatre Box Office.
The musical, based on Frank Wedekind’s controversial 1890s German play of the same name, captures the journey of teenagers grappling with sexual discovery amid societal silence. The original play, known for tackling heavy topics like erotic fantasies and societal oppression, sparked significant public discourse and was subject to historical censorship.
‘It’s a folky rock musical,’ said director Noah Lelek, PhD. ‘We’re in both 1890s Germany and current day. The songs are somewhat contemporary. They’re representative of the minds of the students who were growing up at that point.’
The production involves a sizable cast of 16 actors, led by Jocelyn Losak as Wendla. The cast remains highly engaged throughout the performance, embodying both the historical and contemporary relevance of the play.
Assistant Director E.J. Richard highlights the universal appeal of the narrative, ‘It’s something that is quite timeless. Even though it is set in the 1800s, a lot of the struggles in the show are struggles that people go through today.’
The production of ‘Spring Awakening’ at TWU promises to deliver a poignant exploration of youth and society, brought to life by a talented ensemble and a team of dedicated crew members. It has captivated audiences across the globe, evidenced by multiple Tony awards and enduring popularity. The local rendition is poised to be a significant artistic event for the Denton community.
Prospective attendees should be aware that the show contains mature themes, including strong language and depictions of sensitive issues, and is not recommended for children under 13.
