DENTON, TX, May 27, 2024 – The community of Denton is gearing up for an exciting event on June 1, 2024, with the grand reopening of Joe Skiles Park. This celebration coincides with National Trails Day and features the “Move with the Mayor” initiative, led by Mayor Hudspeth.
The event will commence at 10:00 AM, inviting residents to join in the festivities with their walking shoes, bikes, skateboards, scooters, or inline skates. The revamped park aims to foster a sense of community through improved recreational spaces.
The transformation of Joe Skiles Park was made possible through funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and park dedication and development fees. The Parks and Recreation Department has introduced several new features to enhance the park’s appeal:
- New Trail: A quarter-mile, 8-foot wide trail suitable for walking, running, or rolling, promoting active lifestyles and better health for residents.
- Playground: A new playground for children aged 2-5, designed to help them expend energy and develop physical skills.
- Pavilion: A new pavilion near the playground, ideal for birthday parties and other events.
- Playground Shade: A highly requested feature, providing a cooler, more comfortable play area during hot Texas summers.
- Irrigation and Turf: Upgraded irrigation and turf to combat sandburs, improving the overall park experience.
- Trees and Furnishings: Forty new trees for shade and new benches for comfortable park visits.
National Trails Day, established by the American Hiking Society in 1993, is celebrated on the first Saturday of June. This day focuses on trail advocacy and service, encouraging participation from a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts. The new loop trail at Joe Skiles Park highlights the significance of incorporating trails in all types of parks.
The “Move with the Mayor” event is part of a nationwide initiative by the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, promoting physical activity through community programs and infrastructure.
Residents are encouraged to join in the celebration and take advantage of the improved outdoor space. The event at Joe Skiles Park offers an opportunity to engage with the community, enjoy outdoor activities, and support a healthy lifestyle.
Mark your calendars and head to Joe Skiles Park at 10:00 AM on June 1, 2024, for a day of fun and fitness.
