The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. This week’s report highlights the early start time for yard waste and brush collection from June 23 to September 25 to protect workers from heat, recognition of the Denton Sustainable Schools Program as a finalist in the Texas Environmental Excellence Awards, and flood risk notifications sent to properties in floodplains. It also features Luis, a German Shepherd available for adoption. In response to Council Member inquiries, staff are addressing a potential turn lane on Country Club Road, developing a wildlife crossing signage policy, and managing storm-related issues including fallen trees on Churchill Drive and in Avondale Park.
General Information
Solid Waste and Recycling – Yard Waste and Brush Collection Schedule Change
From June 23 to September 25, yard waste and brush collection services will start at 6 a.m., one hour earlier than usual, to protect staff from heat exposure. Residents are advised to leave bins at the curb if not collected on their regular service day, as all bins will be collected by the end of the week.
Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Luis the German Shepherd
Luis is a one-year-old German Shepherd with a lively and affectionate personality. At the shelter since April 25, he is social, leash trained, and enjoys running and playing fetch. Luis is best suited for active homes and does well with large dogs, though he may be reactive in kennel settings. He responds well to positive reinforcement and knows basic commands. Fostering or adopting him would support his continued development and bring joy to his new home.
Texas Environmental Excellence Awards – Education Finalist Recognition
On June 10, the City of Denton was recognized as an Education Finalist at the 2025 Texas Environmental Excellence Awards for its Denton Sustainable Schools Program. This initiative, led in partnership with the Environmental Services & Sustainability, Solid Waste & Recycling departments, and Denton ISD, showcased successful student education and outreach efforts that promoted environmental stewardship and improved recycling behaviors.
Floodplain Notifications
On June 10, Denton County informed city staff that flood risk notifications were mailed on May 6 to all properties located in floodplains. These letters included flood insurance information and guidance on risk mitigation. This annual communication is part of ongoing city and county flood prevention efforts.
Council Member Requests
Turn Lane Request on Country Club Road
On May 31, a resident inquiry was raised about adding a left-turn lane from southbound Country Club Road/FM 1830 onto Saratoga Drive. City staff conducted a site audit and will coordinate with TxDOT to request the addition of the turn lane.
Wildlife Crossing Signage Policy Development
On June 1, a resident inquiry prompted staff to begin developing a wildlife crossing signage policy. The policy will align with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD), and the request will be reconsidered once the policy is finalized.
Churchill Drive Drainage and Tree Removal
Following heavy rain, a large tree trunk was washed into a Churchill Drive resident’s backyard. Staff conducted a site visit on June 4 to assess the situation. Removal of the tree will be scheduled once the ground has dried to avoid further damage.
Avondale Park Storm-Damaged Trees
After recent storms, city staff inspected Avondale Park and identified two hazardous trees needing removal. These trees will be taken down, and new ones will be planted to replace them as part of ongoing park maintenance efforts.
