The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. This week’s highlights include the launch of Denton 311, a new centralized customer service platform replacing Engage Denton, and a community walking tour of the Denia Neighborhood in celebration of Preservation Month. The Mayor spotlighted a foster dog named Chip, who is undergoing heartworm treatment and seeking a calm home. In response to Council member inquiries, staff addressed erosion concerns near Cooper Creek, confirmed that golf carts are not allowed on Robson Ranch Road due to speed limits, announced the upcoming start of Hickory Creek Road Phase 3 construction, and noted that a tornado siren is planned for the Carnegie Ridge subdivision.

General Information

Denton 311 Launch – Centralized Customer Service Access – On April 29, the City of Denton launched the Denton 311 Contact Center as a centralized, non-emergency communication hub aimed at improving customer service. The online service request portal and mobile functionality have been integrated into the new Denton 311 platform, replacing the previous Engage Denton app. Residents are encouraged to download the new app for mobile service requests or contact 311 by dialing 3-1-1 or (940) 349-7311.

Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Meet Chip – Chip is a six-year-old Terrier and Pit Bull mix currently available for foster or adoption. He is undergoing heartworm treatment and would benefit from a calm, supportive home. Known for his sociable nature, love of toys, and strong food motivation, Chip is easy to train and thrives with interactive play. His affectionate personality makes him a great companion for potential adopters.

Preservation Month – Denia Neighborhood Tour – On May 3, over 70 people joined the Denton Revealed team for a walking tour of the Denia Neighborhood, celebrating Preservation Month 2025. The tour highlighted the area’s mid-century modern architecture and shared stories of former residents. An online version of the tour is available for those who wish to explore the neighborhood virtually.

Council Member Requests

Cooper Creek Erosion – Drainage Easement Guidance – A resident raised concerns about erosion near Cooper Creek along Burning Tree. This area lies within a regulatory floodway, meaning any long-term improvements would require extensive engineering analysis to avoid increasing flood risks elsewhere. Routine maintenance, including erosion control, is the responsibility of adjacent property owners. Interim solutions such as placing rock structures or using vegetation stabilization are recommended, with guidance from qualified professionals.

Golf Cart Use – Robson Ranch Road Safety Review – Following a resident inquiry, staff evaluated golf cart use on Robson Ranch Road. Due to speed limits exceeding 35 mph, golf carts are not permitted on this road, though crossing it is allowed under Texas law. Robson Ranch Road is managed by the County, and city staff have coordinated with them to address safety concerns.

Hickory Creek Phase 3 – Road Construction Timeline – The Hickory Creek Road Phase 3 project is set to resume the week of May 12, with completion expected by late 2026. Hilltop Road at Country Club Road will close starting May 26 for approximately four months to allow for reconstruction and drainage improvements. The project will include road realignment, additional lanes, sidewalks, streetlights, and a new bridge over the floodway and railroad tracks, with timing adjusted to reduce school traffic disruption.

Tornado Siren – Carnegie Ridge Subdivision – A resident requested a tornado siren for the Carnegie Ridge subdivision. Staff confirmed the area is planned as a future site for an outdoor warning siren to enhance emergency alert coverage.
