General Information
Shelter Workgroup Formed – The Denton County Homelessness Leadership Team has created an ad hoc workgroup to improve coordination of services for individuals experiencing homelessness in Denton. The group will aid in developing the Denton Community Shelter waitlist process and housing plan framework. Made up of leaders from various sectors, the workgroup will meet biweekly from early May through June, culminating in an Informal Staff Report to the City Council.
Monthly Financial Report – The City of Denton’s Monthly Financial Report offers a comprehensive, year-to-date overview of financial performance, including highlights on revenues, expenditures, and budget variances. The report is available for public access online.
Building Safety Month – Building Safety Month, celebrated in May, promotes awareness of building safety and appreciation for industry professionals. The Development Services Department will host a city-wide coloring contest for children up to 12 years old, and a Building Safety Month Fair with family activities on May 22. A proclamation recognizing Building Safety Month will also be made at the May 6 City Council meeting.
Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Chip, a 6-year-old Terrier, Pit Bull mix, has been in the shelter since February 14, 2025, and urgently needs a home. Currently undergoing heartworm treatment, Chip thrives on social interaction, is food-motivated, and loves toys, making him an ideal companion for a calm and loving environment.
DTV Video Highlights for April – DTV released several community-focused videos in April, including coverage of the Great American Cleanup 2025, an introduction to Denton 311 services, a feature on local businesses Bullseye Bike Shop and Record Coffee Supply, and a spotlight on Breanna Nix’s participation in American Idol. These videos are broadcast on DTV, shared on social media, and available on the City’s YouTube channel.
Council Member Requests
Bonnie Brae Road Closure – A resident inquiry regarding the Bonnie Brae Street closure not appearing on Waze was addressed, and the closure is now reflected on the map. The closure between FM 1515 and Walt Parker Drive is scheduled through June 30. The City of Denton is also collaborating with the North Central Texas Council of Governments to develop a Work Zone Data Exchange application to standardize and provide real-time updates on work zone data, improving safety for human and automated vehicles. Full development and implementation of the application are expected within three years after the agreement execution.
Bell Avenue Sidewalk – Following an inquiry from a council member, staff completed a safety audit along the east side of North Bell Avenue near East McKinney Street. They identified a need for approximately 170 feet of new sidewalk connecting to a business parking lot. The timeline for installation will depend on available funding.
Streetlight Requests – Recent citizen requests for additional streetlights are evaluated against the Design Criteria Manual standards adopted by the City. Although the standards are not retroactive, staff assess lighting levels and add streetlights where current conditions do not meet the updated standards. Approved requests are prioritized and incorporated into future Capital Improvement Plan budgeting.
