Council Member Requests
Economic Development Plan Update – Staff said several items from the city’s 2020 Economic Development Strategic Plan remain active and relevant. A new plan would typically cost $100,000 to $200,000, and funding will be requested through the next budget process. The Economic Development Partnership Board is finalizing a work plan that will be incorporated into department goals and continue work tied to the Design Downtown Plan and Southeast Denton Area Plan.
Green Ribbon Program Timing – Staff said wildflowers could be part of a TxDOT Green Ribbon project along University Drive, but TxDOT would need to confirm whether a wildflower-only proposal would qualify. The program emphasizes natural landscape improvements, including plant selection and trees, and requires long-term maintenance with TxDOT approval for future design changes. Staff said application cycles are in flux and may not reopen until December 2027.
Sundown Construction Traffic – After an inquiry about traffic hazards caused by a construction crew on Sundown Boulevard, city inspections staff had the contractor move trucks and place flaggers on Oct. 9. The city is also scheduling a meeting with the developer and will continue daily site visits to monitor conditions.
US Lighting Project Progress – Staff said the US 380 lighting project received its notice to proceed on June 15, 2026 and is ahead of schedule. Most conduit is in place, the contractor is working on pole foundations, and the current completion date is June 10, 2027. Updated information is posted on the Discuss Denton US 380 Lighting page.
Park Improvements Timeline – The Bowling Green Park improvements project is expected to be completed around the end of the first quarter of 2027. Current work includes trail construction near the new pedestrian bridge toward the Fireside sidewalk, pavilion preparation, a water tap and meter, irrigation and sod.
Holiday Fire Engine Parade Returns – The Fire Department plans to bring back its holiday fire engine parade for the 2026 season, with decorated engines driving through the city playing holiday music. Staff also plans to publish routes in advance and may add park stops for photo opportunities, with more details expected in late November.
Jail Bond Address Requirement – Staff said a permanent address is not required to bond out of the city jail when posting a cash bond. However, a private bondsman may require a permanent address before posting bond for someone.
