The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. Denton will begin annual notifications to households with lead, galvanized requiring replacement, or unknown private water service lines under federal rules, while noting city water testing has never approached EPA action levels; staff also said police are monitoring Forrestridge for speeding and school bus passing violations, the Sherman Drainage Basin HOA faces enforcement over litter and standing water, Denton ISD now owns the fenced McMath Middle School track through a 2025 land exchange, an all-way stop is planned at Bronco Way and Chivalry Drive by Oct. 30, and AMI pilot notifications include a postcard, text messages, a 72-hour call, and a day-of door hanger.

General Information

Lead pipe notices coming – Next month, Denton will mail annual notices to households with private water service lines identified as lead, galvanized requiring replacement, or unknown under the EPA Lead and Copper Rule revision. The notices will explain the line material classification, steps to reduce lead exposure risk, how to request information or an inspection, and how to report a replaced line so city records can be updated. Customers can check their property on the city’s interactive service line map. The city said routine testing since the early 1980s has never approached or exceeded the EPA action level and that its corrosion control program helps prevent lead from leaching into drinking water.

Council Member Requests

Forrestridge traffic safety – After concerns about speeding and illegal passing of school buses on Forrestridge Drive between Wellington Oaks and Ryan Road, staff said the area is being monitored and police will take enforcement action when violations are observed. Police said they have not received complaints from Denton ISD Transportation about illegal school bus passing in that area.

Sherman basin cleanup enforcement – City staff inspected the Sherman Drainage Basin on Oct. 13 after a resident complaint about litter. The HOA was notified of trash, debris, and standing water violations and given until Oct. 20 to correct them; when that did not happen, the HOA received a Notice of Violation with a Nov. 3 deadline. Community Improvement Services will inspect weekly for the next three months, and Development Services has asked for a remediation timeline to restore the basin to its original condition.

McMath track ownership – In response to a question about fencing around the running track at McMath Middle School, staff said a 2025 land exchange transferred ownership of the track property from the City of Denton to Denton ISD. In exchange, the city received land around the former Calhoun Middle School, now named Congress Street Park.

Bronco Way pedestrian changes – After a safety review of Bronco Way and Chivalry Drive, staff said they observed about 20 students crossing during Denton High School arrival and dismissal times, along with yielding problems and vehicles failing to yield to pedestrians. Based on those observations, the city plans to install an all-way stop at the intersection by Oct. 30.

AMI notification timeline – In response to a resident question about Advanced Metering Infrastructure notifications, staff said they have been in contact with the resident and outlined the pilot-phase process: a general postcard and targeted text messages 1 to 2 weeks before installation, an automated courtesy phone call 72 hours before, and a door hanger on the day of installation.
