Texas Woman’s University Theatre is set to stage a new production of Thornton Wilder’s classic play Our Town, with performances beginning October 14. Directed by TWU Professor of Theatre Patrick Bynane, the production aims to highlight the philosophical themes and stage conventions originally intended by the playwright.
Bynane expressed a commitment to revelatory simplicity in the staging, in alignment with Wilder’s minimalist vision. He noted that many adaptations tend to emphasize nostalgia, overshadowing the depth of Wilder’s existential questions. “If the actors don’t make this world come to life through their relationships and their physicality, then we haven’t really made the world,” Bynane said.
The production employs minimal props and sets, featuring bentwood chairs and trellises to create an intimate portrayal of life in Grover’s Corners. It aims to condense the runtime to under two hours to highlight the significant yet often overlooked themes of the play—including love, life, and mortality.
