The Friday Staff Report to City Council is a weekly communication between staff and Council. This week will be a break from the traditional Friday Staff Report. Our Daily Bread is now serving three meals daily since its opening on December 12th. The city is also looking for someone new to join as Deputy City Manager. Holiday Camps and upcoming road closures.

General Information

The City Manager’s Office will not distribute a Friday Staff Report on Friday, Dec. 30.

The Denton Community Shelter, operated by Our Daily Bread and located at 909 North Loop 288, opened on Dec. 12. The shelter will offer three meals daily, and a bus route will start on Jan. 3 that includes a stop in front of the building. The Go Zone is available to pick up and drop off at the shelter, and Partner agencies are starting to offer services there.

Denton Municipal Electric was recognized by the American Public Power Association for its support in electric power restoration efforts in Lakeland, Florida. DME sent 17 staff members to assist Lakeland Electric with widespread outages caused by Hurricane Ian.

Staff is working with Mosaic Public Partners to find a new Deputy City Manager.

Work on Privet control has been completed around Spencer Road but was temporarily suspended at Bowling Green Park due to the inclement weather.

The Denton Parks and Recreation department hosted a National Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, Dec. 17 at Oakwood Cemetery. More than 250 wreaths were placed on veterans’ headstones as part of the Wreaths Across America mission to remember, honor, and teach the public about veterans’ service.

Council Member Requests

Mayor Hudspeth emailed staff and the Denton County Transportation Authority regarding compliance with quiet zones for A-Train intersections. DCTA has advised all their A-Train intersections are quiet zone compliant.

The Mayor Pro Tern reached out to staff about a location on Elm Street that has heaved and caused a large amount of asphalt to mound. Staff contacted TxDOT who said they would take care of the concerns as soon as they could get a crew on site.

A resident reached out to Mayor Pro-Tern Beck because they had been injured on a storm drain near the sidewalk along University Drive between Elm Street and Bell Avenue. Staff is working with the Texas Department of Transportation to determine if any additional safety measures are needed at this location.

Holiday Camps – Parks and Recreation will be hosting holiday camps from December 19th to January 2nd for children aged 5-15.
