Denton, TX, Sept. 17, 2024 — In response to concerns following the euthanasia of a pet named Gunner, the City of Denton has announced an independent review of its Animal Services Department. The move comes as part of an effort to ensure transparency and uphold high standards in animal care.

The city has engaged Shelter Savvy, a subject matter expert, to conduct a thorough review of the department’s operations, policies, and procedures. The goal is to assess the department’s practices and ensure they align with industry best practices, with a particular focus on euthanasia policies, animal care procedures, and overall shelter management.

The review will evaluate key areas such as staffing, intake, adoption processes, dispatch operations, and resource management. Additionally, the consultant will seek feedback from Animal Services staff to identify current strengths and areas needing improvement.

The city has outlined a timeline for the review, with work officially beginning on September 30, 2024. Initial findings are expected after a 30-day review, followed by a final report two weeks later. The City of Denton has committed to sharing the results publicly and implementing any necessary changes to improve the department’s operations.

City officials emphasized their commitment to transparency and accountability, pledging to keep the community informed throughout the review process.
