The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council, detailing ongoing and upcoming projects. This week’s report highlights privet removal activities starting Feb. 12 to restore open spaces, a controlled burn at Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center scheduled between Feb. 12 and Mar. 15 to enhance habitat diversity, and night-time lane closures on I-35 E from Feb. 9 to Feb. 11 for roadwork, advising motorists to anticipate delays. Additionally, it addresses traffic safety concerns in the Sequoia Neighborhood with proposed solutions including new signage and striping, and a stop sign at a key intersection, alongside police enforcement to manage speeding. The report also covers inquiries regarding Natatorium fee increases, explaining the process involves a Cost of Service report, benchmarking, and market research, with senior discounts available through insurance-based programs.

General Information

Privet Removal – Parks staff will engage in privet removal from Feb. 12 for 3-4 days, aiming to restore open space and habitat characteristics. A dedicated communication page has been set up on Discuss Denton.

Controlled Burn at Clear Creek – A one-day controlled burn will occur between Feb. 12 and Mar. 15 at Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center, improving habitat diversity and promoting growth of native plants. Public notifications will be made through social media and signage.

I-35 E Lane Closures – Northbound lanes on I-35 E will be closed nightly from 9:00PM to 6:00AM, from Feb. 9 to Feb. 11, for roadwork. Delays are expected, and motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and exercise caution.

Council Member Requests

Traffic Safety in Sequoia Neighborhood
– Following concerns about high-speed driving near Shawnee Street and Mohican Avenue, a safety audit was conducted. Recommendations include adding striping, a posted speed sign, a stop sign at the Mohican Avenue intersection, and targeted police speed enforcement. Implementation efforts are underway.

Natatorium Fee Increase Inquiry – In response to questions about the Denton Natatorium’s fee structure, staff highlighted the annual fee adjustment process, which involves a Cost of Service report, benchmarking, and market research. Senior discounts are available through insurance-based programs.
