The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. This report highlights Fleet Services earning a third consecutive ASE Blue Seal of Excellence with major individual technician honors, Denton Aquatics receiving a state safety award for ASL-integrated swim lessons for Deaf and hard-of-hearing children, an adoptable shelter dog featured in the Mayor’s spotlight, and an update on Scripture Street construction delays caused by gas line conflicts, with utility relocation nearing completion and roadway work expected to finish in April.

General Information

ASE Blue Seal of Excellence Renewal – Fleet Services renewed its ASE Blue Seal of Excellence for the third straight year, increasing its ASE-certified workforce to 90% and earning elite individual recognitions, including two World Class Technician awards and a rare Presidents Club distinction, reinforcing high maintenance standards and fleet reliability.

Denton Aquatics Program of the Year Award – The Aquatics Division received the 2025 Safety Program of the Year Award from the Texas Public Pool Council for its ASL-integrated swim lessons developed with the regional day school for the Deaf, serving 16 students and continuing through private lessons with a full relaunch planned this summer.

Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Norman, a recently recovered stray dog, is described as affectionate, food-motivated, and playful with toys, best suited for a teen or adult household as the only pet, and is adjusting well after initial shelter stress while seeking a stable home.

Council Member Requests

Scripture Street Construction Update – Construction on Scripture Street was paused after gas line conflicts were discovered, requiring redesign and relocation work that typically takes six to nine months; the utility provider is scheduled to complete relocation by January 30, roadway work will resume February 4, and full project completion is anticipated by the end of April.
