The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. This week’s report highlights the Denton Fire Department’s achievement of a three-year accreditation with a perfect score, the release of the City’s monthly financial report, and details of upcoming public meetings on airport regulations and long-term planning. Updates also include ongoing park improvements, a transportation services report, and promotion of community resources such as the job fair, DTV video campaigns, and the Mayor’s Pet Spotlight. Additionally, Council was informed of the City’s growth in parkland acreage, ongoing remediation of the Wind River Estates retention pond following a sewer release, and progress on erosion control and paving work for storm drains on Glenwood Lane.

General Information

Denton Fire Department Accreditation – The Denton Fire Department earned a three-year CAAS accreditation with a perfect score across all 107 standards, confirming exceptional performance, clinical quality, and risk reduction; it is now one of 34 fire departments in the U.S. and Canada, and one of four in Texas, to hold this accreditation.

Monthly Financial Reports – The City’s Monthly Financial Report provides year-to-date performance with key revenue and expenditure highlights and budget variances, and is available for public access.

Upcoming Public Meetings at Denton Enterprise Airport – Community meetings will be held at the Airport Administrative Building (5000 Airport Road) to review proposed updates to Airport Rules and Regulations and related ordinances on Tuesday, September 16 at 3 pm and Thursday, September 18 at 5 pm, with an Airport Master Plan workshop on Wednesday, September 24 at 5 pm covering draft development plans and a 20-year capital improvement program.

Carl Young, Sr. Park Improvements – Construction began August 28 to widen the basketball court and add trail connections between the playground, swing set, and sprayground; some areas will be intermittently inaccessible, the sprayground remains open through September 28, and the CDBG-funded project is anticipated to be completed by November 2025.

Transportation Services Semi-Annual Report – The FY 2024-25 Semi-Annual Report was submitted to the Mobility Committee to track completed, ongoing, and upcoming projects, highlighting specific improvements; an executive summary is provided in Attachment A.

Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Macy is a 3-year-old, 41-pound spayed female Pit Bull mix with medium energy who walks well on leash, enjoys fetch and outdoor play, does well in dog playgroups pending a meet-and-greet, and is highly food-motivated, making training easy; she is ready for adoption.

DTV Video Highlights for August – New videos promote Styrofoam recycling at Home Chemical Collections, staying updated on City news, Denton’s water supply planning, and a UNT Football recycling promo; all air on DTV, social channels, and the City’s YouTube.

Denton Community Job Fair – A free job fair will be held Wednesday, September 24, 2025, 10 am–2 pm at the Denton Civic Center (321 E. McKinney St.), featuring employer booths, counseling on job selection and applications, résumé review and printing, interview coaching, free headshots, and resources to overcome employment barriers; employer registration is open through September 17, and job seeker pre-registration begins September 8 at DentonJobFair.com.

Council Member Requests

Park Land Acreage – Between FY 2019-20 and FY 2023-24, the City of Denton expanded its parkland from 4,846 acres to 5,684 acres, marking an increase of 838 acres. Additional performance metrics can be found in the Parks and Recreation Performance Scorecard.

Wind River Estates Retention Pond – A sanitary sewer release on July 16 from a shopping center mixed with stormwater and was discharged into the Wind River Estates retention pond. The line was repaired, and cleanup efforts began under City orders. The pond has since been refilled multiple times, with bacteria levels fluctuating from typical to elevated concentrations. Remediation is ongoing, overseen by both the City and TCEQ. The pond poses no airborne health risk but should not be used for recreation. Residents are advised to avoid the area during cleanup operations.

Storm Drains on Glenwood – Erosion control measures on Glenwood Lane storm drains will begin removal as paving work finishes, with full clearance expected by the second week of September, except for temporary controls needed to prevent sediment runoff.
