The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. This week’s report highlights the upcoming closure of all Denton Public Library locations on Feb. 21 for staff development training, with notifications provided through various channels and extended hold periods for materials. Additionally, the Denton Public Library has received the 2024 Achievement of Library Excellence Award, recognizing its outstanding service in education, workforce development, and digital inclusion. The Mayor’s Pet Spotlight features Rolly, a four-year-old Boxer in need of adoption or foster care. Lastly, staff addressed a resident’s inquiry regarding a masonry wall’s location and maintenance responsibilities, providing relevant plat documents and noting potential encroachment on TxDOT right of way.

General Information

Library Closure – Staff Development Day – All Denton Public Library locations will be closed on Friday, Feb. 21, 2025, for an annual staff development training. Employees from all branches will participate in skill-building and best practice discussions. Closure notices are available on the library’s phone system, website, and social media. Materials on hold will be extended by one extra day.

Library Excellence Award – Denton Public Library has received the 2024 Achievement of Library Excellence Award from the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association. This recognition is given to libraries that excel in serving special populations, promoting education, supporting workforce development, enhancing digital inclusion, and offering literacy programs. Out of 542 public libraries in Texas, only 102 received this distinction in 2024.

Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Rolly – Rolly, a four-year-old Boxer, has been at the shelter since Dec. 5, 2024. He is high-energy, thrives on play, and is highly food-motivated, making him easy to train. Due to his kennel reactivity, he would benefit from adoption or a foster home to help him adjust.

Plat Approval and Wall Maintenance – A resident requested information about a masonry wall’s location and maintenance responsibilities on Feb. 11, 2025. Staff provided the final plat and Declaration of Restrictions, clarifying obligations. The wall appears to be south of the property line and may encroach on TxDOT right of way along FM 2181 and Teasley Lane.

Council Member Requests
