The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. This week’s highlights include the completion of the Hickory Gas Insulated Switchgear substation, which now provides reliable electric service to Denton residents, and a plea for foster support for Gloria, a six-year-old shelter cat in need of a stable home. Staff also addressed council requests regarding safety and infrastructure improvements, including sidewalk and ADA upgrades on Audra Lane and traffic safety measures for Ector Street. The Craver Ranch Municipal Management District project advances toward City Council review, and several upcoming street and lane closures have been scheduled to accommodate necessary maintenance and utility work.
General Information
Hickory Substation Timelapse – The Hickory Gas Insulated Switchgear substation was energized in March 2025, marking a major advancement in Denton’s electric utility network. Construction began in 2022 and is now complete except for minor finishing tasks. The substation enhances reliability for Denton Municipal Electric customers, and a timelapse video documents the project’s progress.
Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Gloria, a six-year-old Domestic Medium Hair cat, has been at the Denton Animal Shelter since August. She is playful, housebroken, and well-suited for a calm household without other pets. Due to her long shelter stay, she urgently needs a foster home to support her emotional well-being and help her adjust to a stable environment.
Council Member Requests
Audra Lane Utility Poles – Council Member Byrd requested evaluation of utility pole placement on Audra Lane. The City developed a plan addressing sidewalk, ADA, and crosswalk safety improvements at nearby intersections, scheduled for implementation during the winter break to reduce impact near local schools.
Ector Street Speed Study and Safety Audit – Mayor Pro Tem Rumohr requested an update on the Ector Street speed study. Staff completed assessments in April and September, noting slightly elevated speeds. The City recommends increased police enforcement, installation of two all-way stops, lane narrowing, and addition of separated bike lanes with safety bollards as funding allows.
