The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. The City of Denton celebrated several achievements, including victories by local competitors at the Texas Solid Waste Association’s 2024 State Road-E-O, and a commendation for Denton Municipal Electric’s storm restoration efforts. In response to Memorial Day storm damage, the Solid Waste and Recycling Department executed a large-scale debris removal operation. Maintenance at the Natatorium will cause temporary closures and schedule changes, and various updates are provided in the ITS Monthly Mobility Report. DTV released educational videos highlighting community events and responses to the storm. Additionally, survey responses were shared with the Council, and inquiries about displaying banners on the Square clarified that only City-sponsored and university banners are permitted.

General Information

Solid Waste Road-E-O Champions – The Lone Star Chapter of the Texas Solid Waste Association of North America hosted its 2024 State Road-E-O on June 22 in Midland, TX. The event showcased skills in operating heavy equipment and waste collection vehicles, fostering competition, professionalism, and safety. The City sent seven competitors and three judges. Truck operator Eddie Kerns placed first in the tractor and trailer competition, crew leader Franqui Vargus placed third in the compactor competition, and crew leader Alfonso Piedra placed third in the front load competition. Eddie’s victory earned him a trip to the International Road-E-O in Dublin, Georgia, on October 5, 2024.

Memorial Day 2024 Storm Solid Waste Recap – Denton experienced significant weather damage on Memorial Day 2024. The Solid Waste and Recycling Department (SWR), with the Streets Department’s help, launched “Operation Push” to clear debris. From May 27 to June 21, SWR worked six days a week, collecting 2,155 tons of yard waste and brush, nearly triple the usual volume. Normal operations resumed on June 24, with future debris removal requests incorporated into the weekly yard waste service.

National Commendation for Electric Restoration Efforts – On June 21, Denton Municipal Electric (DME) received a commendation from the American Public Power Association (APPA) for assisting in electric restoration in Garland, TX, after storms on May 28. DME restored Denton’s infrastructure and responded to Garland Power and Light’s Mutual Aid request, sending two crews from May 30 to June 3. APPA President & CEO Scott Corwin praised DME for their mutual aid efforts.

Monthly Mobility Report – Innovative Transportation Solutions (ITS) provided a monthly report detailing several major regional Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) projects. For more details, see the attached ITS Monthly Mobility Report.

City Aquatic Facility Closure and Schedule Changes – The Natatorium will be closed for maintenance from July 1 to July 3, reopening on July 4. A new air compressor will be installed, and additional maintenance will be performed. During the closure, aerobic classes will move to the Civic Center Pool. Active memberships will be honored at Water Works Park and the Civic Center Pool. Several schedule changes will occur over the summer, affecting lap swim availability, weekday hours, and weekend operations. Detailed changes and updates are available on the city’s website.

DTV Video Highlights for June – DTV released several videos in June to raise awareness and educate the community. Highlights include “After the Storm: Catching Up on Yard Waste,” documenting the response to increased yard waste post-Memorial Day storm; “Theater Denton Takes ‘Singing in the Rain’ to South Korea,” featuring Theatre Denton’s participation in the Daegu International Musical Festival; and “Nonprofit Management Certificate Program,” highlighting training for local nonprofits.
