DENTON, TX, Dec. 14, 2021 – On Thursday, Dec. 16, the American Legion Hall (ALH) Senior Center, 629 Lakey St., will reopen to the public.

The ALH Senior Center closed on Dec. 13, 2019, for the renovations to begin. The south building was demolished and completely rebuilt, while the north building was extensively remodeled and got a new roof.

The Grand Reopening begins at 10 a.m. and will include the Presentation of the Colors from the Denton Fire Department, Honor Guard and Pipe and Drums, and songs by Cassandra Berry and Broderick Perkins. The message will be from Mayor Gerard Hudspeth, Robbie Gobert, ALH Advisory Council President, and Debra Shepard, SEDNASecretary.

After the ceremony, the center will remain open until 5 p.m. to the public for tours, fitness classes and orientations, and other demos. These will all be free and not require any rec pass.

Beginning on Friday, Dec. 17 the ALH Senior Center will resume with normal operating hours, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6-10:30 p.m. on Tuesdays for dominoes.

The ALH building has been an important part of the Southeast Denton Neighborhood Association (SEDNA) since it was built in 1928.

The American Legion Hall was created to serve African American Veterans in 1928. In so doing, ALH began to function as a community center hosting organizational meetings and social functions like weddings and galas. Today the ALH continues that legacy but expanded its reach to veterans and the community at large.

The newly renovated American Legion Hall Senior Center features a multi-purpose room, recreation room, computer lab, and fitness room with a patio overlooking Fred Moore Park.
