The University of North Texas (UNT) has announced the North Texas Promise program, set to commence in Fall 2026, which will enable qualifying freshmen to attend the university tuition-free for up to four years. This initiative aims to increase access to higher education for Texas families by covering full tuition and mandatory fees for eligible students.
The North Texas Promise program specifically targets Texas residents graduating from high schools within the state. Eligibility criteria include having a total family income of $100,000 or less and either ranking in the top 25% of their high school class with financial need or qualifying for the Federal Pell Grant. Additionally, students must be admitted to UNT for Fall 2026 and have a valid FAFSA filed with the university by February 15, 2026.
As noted by UNT President Harrison Keller, Ph.D., “As the largest university in North Texas, UNT has a special responsibility to expand access to transformative educational opportunities across our region and beyond.”
Shannon Goodman, UNT’s vice president for enrollment, emphasized the program’s importance, stating, “The North Texas Promise gives families clarity and confidence that cost will not stand in the way of a college education.”
