DENTON, Texas – The University of North Texas (UNT) Police Department has once again distinguished itself by securing an advanced law enforcement accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). This notable achievement places the department among the top 5% of law enforcement agencies across the nation, a testament to its commitment to excellence in public safety.

This 2023 accreditation marks the department’s sixth consecutive honor since its initial recognition in 2006, underlining a sustained dedication to high standards. CALEA, a respected authority established in 1979, grants this accreditation to agencies that voluntarily submit to a rigorous evaluation process, thereby demonstrating their commitment to maintaining the highest level of professionalism and accountability.

The accreditation process involves a comprehensive review of 456 advanced standards, covering various aspects of law enforcement operations, including policy formulation, organizational management, and support services. To retain their accreditation status, agencies must continually adhere to these standards over a four-year cycle, highlighting their ongoing commitment to public safety and professional excellence.

UNT Police Chief Ramona Washington expressed pride in the department’s achievement, stating, “Accreditation is a gold standard for best practices in our profession. We participate in this voluntary program to show our community that we willingly hold ourselves accountable. We are thrilled to have received reaccreditation. This process is demanding all year long, but it’s a worthwhile venture for our community.”

The formal commission hearing, which confirmed UNT Police’s 2023 accreditation, took place on Nov. 11 in Bellevue, Washington. CALEA’s establishment is the result of collaborative efforts by leading law enforcement organizations, including the International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, National Sheriffs’ Association, and Police Executive Research Forum.

In addition to the CALEA accreditation, the UNT Police Department also holds accreditation from the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA), further solidifying its status as a leader in university law enforcement. This dual accreditation underscores the department’s unwavering dedication to upholding the highest standards of public safety and community service.
