In celebration of the International Day for Women and Girls in Science, Texas Woman’s University (TWU) is organizing a ‘Celebration of Women and Girls in STEM’ from February 10th to 13th. This event is hosted by the university’s Office of STEM Collaborations and will be held at the Ann Stuart Science Complex atrium in Denton.

The series of events is set to recognize the contributions of women and girls in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine. These activities serve as a precursor to the Texas Girls in STEM Day on March 1st.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on February 10th and 11th, and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on February 12th and 13th, attendees can enjoy pizza, participate in STEM-oriented games, and engage in rock painting activities, all designed to foster interest in STEM fields. In addition, opportunity tables will be available for participants.

As part of its community service initiative, TWU students will create STEM kits for third-grade classes at Alexander Elementary School in Denton. These kits will contain educational materials such as journals, pencils, models, rulers, thermometers, STEM games, stickers, motivational signage, and personalized encouragement cards.

Diana Elrod, Director of the Center for Student Research and coordinator of the Office of STEM Collaborations, emphasized the importance of this collaboration with Alexander Elementary. ‘We’re trying to make students aware,’ Elrod stated, underscoring the value in developing a relationship with local schools through educational support.

The celebration will conclude with an invitation-only reception on February 13th at 4 p.m. in the Science Research Complex, honoring the achievements of TWU’s women in science.

The Office of STEM Collaborations and Initiatives at TWU is committed to promoting excellence in STEM education and research through comprehensive leadership, coordination, and support services. The initiative aims to create an enhanced collaborative and innovative environment, cutting across traditional college, department, and division boundaries.
