DENTON, TX, May 6, 2024 – As the swimming season approaches, Denton Parks and Recreation has released a series of water safety guidelines to help residents enjoy aquatic activities safely. In collaboration with the National Drowning Prevention Alliance and other safety experts, the department emphasizes the importance of preparedness and caution in, on, and around water.

Open Water Safety: Residents are advised to swim only in designated areas and to always have a buddy present. Checking weather and water conditions before any outing is also recommended, along with carrying necessary equipment for changing conditions.

Lifejacket Use: Denton Parks and Recreation urges the use of US Coast Guard-approved lifejackets that fit properly. Lifejackets should not rise above the ears and all straps must be securely fastened. For more information on selecting the appropriate lifejacket for various water activities, the public is encouraged to visit www.wearitlifejacket.com.

Sun Protection: With skin safety in mind, the American Red Cross advises applying sunscreen at least 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapplying every two hours. Protective clothing such as wide-brimmed hats, long sleeves, and sunglasses are also recommended, especially during peak UV radiation times between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Swimming as a Beneficial Activity: Beyond safety, Denton Parks and Recreation highlights the benefits of swimming, which include improved strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. Swimming is also a social activity that fosters friendships and can be a gateway to other water sports.

The department encourages all residents to adhere to these safety tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer. Being informed and prepared is key to water safety, as is vigilant adherence to safety practices.
