The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. This week’s highlights include upcoming holiday facility closures, progress updates on Council priorities, promotion of an adoptable shelter pet, the opening of Community Development Grant Program applications, and the postponement of several naming applications to allow further public input. Additional updates cover recent property damage incidents, a forthcoming TxDOT sign replacement to improve traffic clarity, and the status of nominations for the Denton Central Appraisal District Board.

General Information

Thanksgiving Holiday Friday Staff Report – City facilities will be closed on November 27 and 28 for the Thanksgiving holiday, and no Friday Staff Report will be issued next week.

City Council Priorities Update – An updated report summarizing fourth-quarter progress on Council priorities is now available, with initiatives also tracked in the City’s performance management dashboard.

Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Brindy, a gentle and affectionate dog recovering from being severely underweight, is available for adoption or fostering. She prefers being the only dog in a home and continues to make progress on her weight-gain plan.

2026–27 Community Development Grant Program Applications Open – Applications for Human Services, Housing, and Public Facility Projects open November 24, 2025, and close January 16, 2026. An in-person mandatory training will be held December 9 for nonprofit applicants.

Postponement of Naming Applications – Three naming proposals (Civic Center, Day Labor Site, and Juneteenth Tournament) were postponed until January 13, 2026, to allow additional community feedback, which will be gathered through an in-person meeting and online engagement.

Property Damage Incidents – Two recent vehicle accidents caused damage to public infrastructure: one damaged the pedestrian bridge near Emily Fowler Library, and another destroyed a Halloween-themed sign and adjacent brick wall on North Locust Street. Assessments and notifications are underway.

Council Member Requests

Traffic Sign at Loop 288 – Following a request to address mismatched lane designations at the I-35 southbound service road, TxDOT will replace the sign to align with pavement markings.

Denton Central Appraisal District Appointee Nomination – The City Council nominated Ann Pomykal and Mike Hennefer for DCAD Board service. A ballot containing all entity nominations will return to the Council for a December 2 vote.
